5 Skills an eCommerce SEO Expert Should Have

An eCommerce SEO expert is, broadly speaking, someone with a lot of experience getting websites to rank organically by adjusting website factors called ranking signals.

The better optimized a website is, the better it will rank in the organic search results, and the more traffic it will get as a result.

But what does someone really need to have in order to have a legit claim to the title of an eCommerce SEO expert?

This is a good place to start.

Keyword Research Skills

The first – and most basic – skill that any eCommerce SEO expert should have is keyword research skills.

These people need to tell the difference between the types of search intent and also look at a list of search engine results themselves and tell from the soft data if a keyword is worth going after or not.

Moreover, an SEO expert needs to know whether or not a keyword has sufficient volume and low enough traffic to make it worth it.

Writing Skills

For better or for worse, the main pillar of SEO is content, and that’s what really gets the job done. In the modern era, an SEO expert is going to be a writer. There’s no way to separate these skills.

In fact, anytime you see an article rank in the search results, that author knows a good bit about SEO best practices, whether or not he or she knows it or not.

And this doesn’t mean experience with AI – artificial intelligence is still in its infancy and generative results are not going to replace human written copy anytime soon (although that could happen in the future).

A Demonstrated Ability to Get Specific Pages to Rank Effectively Through Copy

Following on the coattails of the previous claim, it’s important to recognize that an eCommerce SEO expert should specifically be able to point to actual pages that he or she got to rank, more or less through copy alone.

If anyone can show you live web pages, then go through the list of optimizations he or she made to get it to rank, we’re talking about someone that we could conservatively call an SEO expert.

Some Degree of Technical Proficiency

An SEO expert doesn’t need to be a web developer, as that is a separate skill. So you shouldn’t be expecting one to be able to tell you about integrations and scrubbing a website’s tech debt.

At the same time, any eCommerce SEO expert should know about SSL certifications and page speeds through Google’s Pagespeed Insights, as well as how to configure a robots.txt file to make sure your crawl budget doesn’t get wasted.

On top of that, an SEO expert should be able to walk you through the process of compressing and optimizing images so that they show up in the search results too.

Communication Skills

While this really isn’t an SEO skill, so to speak, communication skills are vital to any expert that wants to sell his or her services.

Let’s put it this way: if you hire an SEO agency to improve your website’s organic performance, you’ll be better served by a professional that is an effective communicator than you’ll be by one that isn’t.
