New Top Dog

French Bulldog Overtakes Labrador Retriever After 31-Year Reign

For more than three decades, the Labrador Retriever stood proudly as America’s most beloved dog breed. With its friendly demeanour, intelligence, and adaptability, the Lab had long held the crown as the nation’s top-registered dog. But in a surprising turn of events, the American Kennel Club (AKC) announced that in 2022, the French Bulldog—affectionately known as the Frenchie—had dethroned the Labrador, becoming the most-registered dog breed in the United States.

This historic shift marks the first time in 31 years that another breed has taken the top spot, reflecting not only evolving lifestyle preferences but also the growing affection for compact, low-maintenance pets, especially in urban areas.

The Rise of the Frenchie

French Bulldogs have skyrocketed in popularity over the past decade, thanks to their distinctive appearance—bat-like ears, short snouts, and compact muscular frames—and their playful, affectionate nature. In 2012, Frenchie’s were ranked only 14th on the AKC’s list. But by 2017, they had already climbed into the top five. By 2021, they had taken the number two spot, trailing just behind the Labrador. And in 2022, they finally claimed the throne.

According to AKC registration data, the French Bulldog topped the list with the highest number of new registrations among all purebred dogs, signalling a major shift in American dog ownership trends.

Why the Frenchie?

Several factors contribute to the French Bulldog’s meteoric rise. First and foremost is their suitability for urban and apartment living. Unlike Labradors, which are larger and require more space and exercise, Frenchie’s thrive in smaller living quarters. Their moderate energy levels and minimal grooming needs make them ideal for busy professionals and families living in cities.

Additionally, French Bulldogs are known for their charming personalities. They are social, affectionate, and great with children and other pets. Their comical expressions and low-bark tendencies also make them favourites among those who appreciate a quieter companion.

Celebrity influence has also played a role. High-profile Frenchie owners such as Lady Gaga, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Leonardo DiCaprio have put the breed in the spotlight, enhancing its appeal among dog lovers worldwide.

A Bit of History

The French Bulldog’s roots trace back to England in the 1800s, where they were bred as smaller versions of the English Bulldog. When lace workers relocated to France during the Industrial Revolution, they took the breed with them. In France, these small bulldogs were further refined into the modern French Bulldog we know today.

Despite their name, the breed has always maintained an international flair, combining English sturdiness with French charm. The AKC officially recognized the breed in 1898.

A Word of Caution

While the French Bulldog’s popularity is soaring, experts and veterinarians urge prospective owners to approach with care. The breed is prone to several health issues due to its brachycephalic (flat-faced) structure. Breathing difficulties, spinal disorders, and heat sensitivity are common among Frenchies.

Dr. Jerry Klein, the AKC’s Chief Veterinary Officer, warns: “Prospective owners should do their research and ensure they’re working with responsible breeders who prioritize health and genetic screening.”

Animal welfare advocates have also expressed concern about the potential for overbreeding and unethical breeding practices in response to increased demand.

Labs Still Loved

Though the Labrador Retriever has slipped to the number two position, its popularity remains strong. Labs continue to be cherished for their loyalty, trainability, and versatility. They excel in service roles, search-and-rescue operations, and are still the go-to family pet for many Americans.

Final Woof

The French Bulldog’s rise to the top reflects changing lifestyles, shifting preferences, and perhaps a little bit of celebrity stardom. Whether it is their comical charm, manageable size, or urban-friendly disposition, one thing is clear—the Frenchie has captured the hearts of America.

As the canine crown passes from the Lab to the Frenchie, one can only wonder which breed might emerge next in this ever-evolving love affair between Americans and their four-legged companions.
