Okay so uh, I got this ASUS ROG Strix G17 a few days ago and I just wanted to like, quickly jot down some thoughts before I forget, cuz sometimes I start using a laptop and then totally forget what I even thought about it. Honestly, at first I was like “meh, another gaming laptop,” there’s like a million of these things, right? But after using it a bit, I kinda like it… not perfect, not amazing, but actually pretty solid for what it is.
First Impressions
The first thing I noticed was the size. It’s huge, like seriously, 17.3-inch screen huge. Definitely not something you’re gonna carry around casually every day. But if you mostly use it on a desk, it’s fine. Feels sturdy, kinda premium, and the keyboard lighting is cool. Not gonna lie tho, I wish there were more lighting options, but whatever.
It’s also kinda heavy. Like, I tried carrying it from my bed to the table and my arm was like, ugh. But again, desktop replacement laptop, so I guess that’s fine.
Performance
Okay, now the fun part. This thing is a beast. It’s got AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 GPU. Yeah, sounds fancy and it kinda is. I tried playing some heavy games and streaming videos at the same time, and honestly, no lag, no stuttering, nothing. Multitasking is smooth too, even with Chrome open with like 10 tabs, Word, and a game in the background. Totally fine.
I did notice that if you push it super hard, the fans get loud. Like really loud. At first I thought it was broken or something, but it’s normal. It keeps the laptop cool tho, so I guess it’s worth the noise.
Display
The 17.3-inch screen is awesome. Full HD, 144Hz refresh rate, and the colors are kinda vibrant. Watching movies, gaming, browsing – all smooth. Only small thing I noticed is a tiny bit of backlight bleed in really dark scenes, but honestly, I barely notice it.
Battery and Ports
Battery life is okay. I got around 4-5 hours with normal use, but obviously gaming drains it faster. For a laptop this size and power, I think it’s fine.
Ports are good. USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, Ethernet, headphone jack… basically everything you need. Wi-Fi 6 works fine too, didn’t drop once while testing.
Keyboard and Trackpad
Keyboard is comfy. Keys have decent travel, RGB looks good, typing feels solid. Trackpad is fine for normal use but for gaming you’re gonna want a mouse.
Random Thoughts
Uh, I dunno, there’s just something nice about this laptop. It doesn’t try to be flashy outside of the RGB, just works. Gaming, work, multitasking – all smooth. Build is solid enough, fans get loud but they do their job, and the screen is nice. Overall, I’m kinda happy with it.
Final Thoughts
So yeah, ASUS ROG Strix G17 isn’t perfect. Fans are loud under load, it’s heavy, backlight bleed in dark scenes, not super portable… but it’s powerful, smooth, has a big screen, solid keyboard, decent battery, and handles gaming and productivity without problems. If you want a big, desktop-replacement gaming laptop that actually works and doesn’t feel cheap, this is worth checking out.
