Ronda Rousey came into the WWE with much fanfare and intrigue. Fans were wondering whether the former UFC superstar could translate her talents into the squared circle. Her debut at WrestleMania 34 in 2018 only added to the idea that Rousey was a natural in the ring. Her quick grasp of the intricacies of professional wrestling, combined with her massive box-office pull catapulted her to a RAW Women’s title win by SummerSlam the same year.
But some of Ronda’s shine started washing away week by week. By the time she faced Charlotte Flair at Survivor Series, The Baddest Woman On The Planet was booed out of the arena.
A small but core part of the WWE universe had turned on Ronda Rousey, and they have never returned to the side that cheers her.
On the road to WrestleMania 35, Rousey turned into a heel/tweener role in opposition to the uber-popular Becky Lynch. The WrestleMania main event, which saw Rousey lose to a surprise pin by Lynch proved to be her last WWE appearance in almost three years.
Another battle arena opened up between Ronda Rousey and the WWE Universe on social media. In a YouTube Livestream ahead of WrestleMania 39, Ronda criticised the scripted and “fake” nature of WWE. She has doubled down on statements in interviews and tweets since. While some call it a tactic to be disliked as a heel, as it is generally when she plays a heelish character when she makes such statements, her comments have never sat right with a large section of the WWE Universe.
A cheered return and win at Royal Rumble 2022 was quickly soured upon by fans after a deflating defeat against Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 38. Over the next year, Ronda took on the likes of Liv Morgan and Shotzi over the SmackDown Women’s Championship, she teamed up and then broke up with long-time friend Shayna Baszler, and then took on Shayna in a disappointing match at SummerSlam 2023, after which Rousey has parted ways with the WWE.
In her second run with the company, fans found another reason to not subscribe to Ronda Rousey as a WWE character. Her match quality was significantly down from her first run. Apart from a couple of decent matches against Liv Morgan, Ronda had forgettable to bad matches most nights (due to no particular fault of her own).
This was a brief summary of Ronda Roudey’s complicated relationship with the WWE Universe. While most fans accept that she is a great in-ring talent, many just never vibe with her ‘perfect athlete from other sports’ character.
