What Is HTML?

Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML, is a comparatively easy-to-learn language used to construct online pages. It isn’t regarded as a “programming language” because it disallows variables and functions; rather, it is regarded as a “markup language,” which employs tags to specify items inside a document.

What does the term “hypertext markup language” actually mean? Let’s dissect it.

Hypertext is text that, typically through links, connects elements that are connected in some way (also called hyperlinks). For web browsers, markup language describes the design and organisation of a page.

Therefore, HTML ensures that text and graphics appear where they should and that viewers may easily explore your website. Your web server provides this data so that web browsers can create the web pages you visit on a daily basis.

In its unprocessed state, HTML contains numerous symbols and brackets that don’t seem to have any use. All of it, nevertheless, goes toward the ultimate product that customers see.

HTML is used to build websites’ basic framework. This language collaborates with JavaScript and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to build user-friendly web pages that are visually beautiful and interactive.

The bottom line is that a solid web page is built on HTML. Without it, you couldn’t put your own touch to the website of your dreams, much less share text with website visitors.

The History of HTML

HTML was developed by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in late 1991, but it wasn’t made widely available until 1993.

At that time, HTML1 was initially released. It was always intended to be a way of sharing data through web browsers.

Soon after it was launched, HTML’s growth stagnated because there weren’t many web developers making websites at the time.

HTML2 was the markup language standard for web design through 1997 after it was published in 1995 with new features.

HTML3 was created at that time by Dave Raggett. Webmasters now have more potent tools at their disposal for creating pages. Sadly, it was innovative before its time. The HTML3 capabilities actually made browsers slower because they couldn’t use them yet.

In 1999, HTML4.01 was created, and it included support for multimedia possibilities. Style sheets, printing capabilities, and new scripting languages were also incorporated with this upgrade.

HTML5 was introduced more recently in 2015. More media storage support and specialised content components were provided with the introduction of HTML5. Audio and video embedding as well as inline doctype were greatly simplified.

In 2022, everyone will be using HTML5.2, which strengthens the content security policy just when we need it.

Additionally, it places a heavy emphasis on e-commerce and has a payment request API. Disability-friendly online applications were also incorporated as part of this upgrade.
