How Do Backlinks Work?

Backlinks are links that lead to a page on another website from one website (sometimes referred to as “inbound links,” “incoming links,” or “one-way links”). Google and other leading search engines consider backlinks to be “votes” for a certain website. The majority of the time, pages with plenty of backlinks do well in organic search results.

Why Do Backlinks Matter?

Backlinks essentially serve as website votes. Each of these votes tells search engines that the information is valuable, trustworthy, and useful.

The algorithms used by search engines have long included links. In actuality, backlinks served as the foundation for the original Google algorithm (known as “PageRank”).

Backlinks are still a significant ranking component, even though Google has modified its algorithm tens of thousands of times since then.

What Types of Backlinks are Valuable?

Backlinks are not created equally.

In order to rank higher in the SERPs, you should prioritise high-quality backlinks.

In other words:

One high-quality backlink has a greater impact than 1,000 low-quality ones.

They Originate From Reliable, Credible Websites

This concept is known as “Domain Authority.” The amount of authority that a site may transmit to your site, in essence, depends on how authoritative it is.

Trait #2: They incorporate your target keyword into the link’s anchor text:

To review, anchor text is the visible text that appears in a link.

Generally speaking, you want your target term to appear in the anchor text of your links.

The correlation between keyword-rich anchor text and better rankings for that keyword was actually discovered in a recent industry study.

And now, a little word of caution:

Avoid using anchor text that is overly keyword-heavy. The “Google Penguin” filter is really part of the Google algorithm.

Black hat link building techniques are forbidden by Google Penguin. Additionally, it gives special consideration to websites that create links using exact match anchor text.

Trait #3: The Website Linking to You Is Subject-Related to Your Website:

Google wants to know that two websites are related when one links to another.

When you think about it, the following makes sense:

Consider the article you just wrote about running marathons.

Then, Google will give links from websites about marathons, running, and fitness MUCH MORE weight than links from websites about fishing, unicycles, and digital marketing.

Trait #4: The link is marked as “Dofollow.”

Links with the “nofollow” tag attached are ignored by Google and other search engines.

Fortunately, the vast majority of web links are “dofollow” connections.

In addition, most links with the nofollow attribute aren’t all that desirable to begin with. These sources, for instance, frequently use nofollow links:

  • Blog remarks
  • Press reports
  • Pay-per-click ads

Even though these links are nofollow, it doesn’t really matter because they aren’t very beneficial for SEO.

Make a Linkable Assets list.

You need content on your website that is worthwhile connecting to if you want others to link to it.

A linkable asset can be anything that people will want to link to, such as a blog post, video, programme, quiz, or survey.

Your linkable item will typically be a fantastic piece of content (which is why search engine optimization and content marketing are so closely tied together).
